Handshake is a career network founded in 2014 that connects students and graduates with employers, and in 2025 it launched Handshake AI to supply human-labelled training data to AI labs. The new business uses its network of university experts, including PhD and master’s holders, to write and evaluate material that AI models learn from.
From jobs board to data business
For about a decade Handshake was where a student at a state school looked for a summer job. Its own announcements and the Lenny’s Newsletter interview with chief executive Garrett Lord say that it realised its verified academic network was exactly what AI labs needed for expert data work. The company describes a three-sided marketplace of about 25 million knowledge workers, 1,600 educational institutions and a million employers.
What contributors do
Experts produce and review training material in nearly 200 specialties, from medicine and law to engineering. Profiles say the AI arm reached US$50 million in revenue in its first four months and later reports put annualised AI revenue near US$1.1 billion; these come from the company and from newsletters and should be read as claims.
