DataAnnotation (dataannotation.tech) is a platform where people do remote tasks that help train AI systems, such as ranking model responses, checking facts and labelling data. It is operated by Surge Labs, trading as Surge AI, and it says it has paid more than US$20 million to contractors since 2020.

How getting in works

Applicants take a Starter Assessment, which is unpaid, takes about an hour and allows one attempt. Writing quality and careful reading are what it tests. Passing does not promise work, because projects open and close depending on client demand.

The work

Typical projects include reviewing AI-written text, comparing two answers and explaining which is better, fact checking, and reviewing content in specialist areas such as coding, mathematics, law or medicine. Specialist projects need proof of expertise.

Pay

Independent guides say general projects pay about US$20 to US$30 an hour and specialist projects US$50 to US$100 or more. The platform says it pays weekly by PayPal and charges contributors nothing. Rates and availability differ by project and country and are set by the platform, so treat third-party figures as indicative.

Realistic expectations

  • It is contract work, not a salary, so income can be uneven.
  • Never pay anyone for access; a legitimate sign-up does not charge.
  • Check the tax rules for freelance income where you live.

What we could not verify

We did not take the assessment or work on a project. The 2024 revenue figure reported for Surge AI comes from press coverage of the parent company.
