The Fairphone (Gen. 6) is a modular Android phone designed around repairability and long term use. Fairphone currently lists it at €599 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the newer Gen. 6+ costs €649 with 12GB of RAM and a faster Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor.

The important part is not raw benchmark performance. Fairphone is built so owners can replace major parts themselves, including the battery, display and USB port, instead of replacing the whole phone when one component fails.

Fairphone Gen. 6 specifications

  • Display: 6.31 inch LTPO AMOLED with an adaptive 10 to 120Hz refresh rate.
  • Processor: Snapdragon 7s Gen 3.
  • Memory: 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.
  • Expandable storage: microSD support up to 2TB.
  • Main camera: 50MP.
  • Battery: removable 4,415mAh battery.
  • Water resistance: IP55.
  • Warranty: five years, subject to Fairphone’s warranty terms.
  • Software support: promised until at least 2033.

What makes it repairable?

Fairphone says owners can replace up to 12 spare parts themselves. The phone is designed around modules rather than gluing or permanently sealing every component inside the chassis.

That matters most for the parts that commonly wear out. A battery loses capacity over time, a charging port can fail, and a cracked display does not normally justify throwing away the rest of a working phone. Fairphone sells replacement modules so those parts can be changed separately.

The battery is removable

The 4,415mAh battery can be replaced without sending the device to a repair centre. Fairphone says the battery is designed to retain at least 80% of its nominal capacity after more than 1,000 charge cycles.

The company advertises up to two days of use, but its more specific published figures include up to about 15 hours of video playback and nearly 18 hours of web browsing. Real use will vary significantly.

Software support is part of the value

Fairphone promises software support until at least 2033 and says the Gen. 6 will receive at least seven Android version upgrades. That is important because repairable hardware is much less useful if software support ends while the phone is still physically working.

Fairphone Gen. 6 versus Gen. 6+

The two models share most of the same design and repairable hardware. The main differences are processor, memory, colours and price.

  • Gen. 6: Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, 8GB RAM, €599.
  • Gen. 6+: Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, 12GB RAM, €649.

If you mainly care about repairability and longevity, the standard model already gives you the core Fairphone idea. The 6+ makes more sense if you want extra memory and slightly stronger performance.

Is it a flagship phone?

Not in the usual performance sense. Phones from Apple, Samsung and Google at similar or higher prices can offer faster processors, more advanced camera systems and stronger water resistance.

Fairphone is competing on a different value proposition: keep the same phone longer, replace the part that fails and continue receiving software updates for years.

Who should consider it?

The Gen. 6 is most interesting for people who normally keep a phone for several years, care about repair costs or dislike replacing an otherwise working device because of one damaged component.

If your priority is gaming performance, flagship cameras or maximum water resistance, there are stronger options. If your priority is ownership and repairability, Fairphone remains unusual.
