Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026. In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at US$1,199 and the Pro Max at US$1,299, both with 256GB of storage. Pre-orders opened on 12 September and general availability began on 18 September.
The biggest changes are not a total redesign. They are concentrated in the camera, sustained performance, battery life and Apple’s on-device AI hardware. The new 48MP Fusion Main camera has a variable aperture, the A20 Pro chip moves to a 2-nanometre process, and both phones use a redesigned vapour chamber for cooling.

The camera is the clearest hardware change
The 48MP Fusion Main camera introduces variable aperture to the iPhone. Instead of using one fixed opening, the lens can change how much light reaches the sensor and how much of the scene stays in focus. Apple says the system uses six blades and can move between four aperture settings.
That matters in two common situations. In low light, the camera can open wider to let in more light. For group shots or scenes where you want more of the frame sharp, it can narrow the aperture for greater depth of field. Apple also added manual Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, plus a histogram inside the Camera app.
There is also a new Apple Reference Image feature. In Reference mode, the phone can preserve signed sensor data so a viewer can compare an edited photo with an authenticated reference. That is a more specialised feature, but it is one of the more unusual additions to the 18 Pro camera system.
A20 Pro, cooling and connectivity
A20 Pro is built on a 2nm process. Apple lists a 6-core CPU and 7-core GPU, with the GPU rated up to 40% faster than A19 Pro in Apple’s own testing. The chip also has a dual 16-core Neural Engine, giving it 32 Neural Engine cores in total for on-device AI and computational photography.
The phones use a new vapour chamber with a larger cooling area than the iPhone 17 Pro generation. The point is not only higher peak benchmark numbers: better cooling is meant to let the phone hold performance for longer during gaming, video work and AI workloads.
Wireless hardware includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple’s N1 networking chip. Apple also introduced its C2 cellular modem system on the 18 Pro lineup.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 34 hours of video playback and the iPhone 18 Pro Max for up to 43 hours. Those are Apple test figures, so real battery life will depend on signal strength, screen brightness, apps and how heavily the camera or AI features are used.
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50% charge in around 15 minutes with a compatible wired setup, or around 30 minutes wirelessly. The company also says five minutes of wired charging on the Pro Max can provide around seven hours of video playback.
Display, size and storage
The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the Pro Max uses a 6.9-inch display. Both keep Face ID and use a smaller Dynamic Island that can show up to three Live Activities at once.
Both models start at 256GB rather than 128GB, then move through 512GB and 1TB to a 2TB option. That matters most to people recording a lot of high-resolution video or keeping large media libraries on-device.
What the US price does and does not tell you
The US launch prices are US$1,199 and US$1,299. They should not be converted directly into a Nigerian, UK or European street price because local taxes, exchange rates, import costs and Apple’s regional pricing differ. If you are buying outside the US, check the Apple store or an authorised seller in your market rather than relying on a straight currency conversion.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth upgrading to?
The upgrade makes the most sense if you care about camera control, battery life or sustained performance. The variable-aperture camera is a real hardware change rather than a software-only feature, and the battery improvement on the Pro Max is substantial on Apple’s published figures.
If your current phone is already recent and those areas do not matter much to you, the case is less obvious. The design is still recognisably an iPhone Pro, and many everyday tasks will not feel radically different simply because the chip is newer.
