Surfshark is a virtual private network (VPN) service from Surfshark B.V., a cybersecurity company established in 2018 with its headquarters in the Netherlands. In February 2022 it completed a merger with Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN, though the two brands continue to run separate infrastructure and products.

Who owns it

Surfshark began as a Lithuanian-founded company. The merger with Nord Security, announced in 2021 and finalised in early 2022, means the two best-known budget-to-premium VPN brands now share a parent, even though they compete on the shelf. Check that when you read comparison articles that treat them as independent rivals.

What the audits say

Surfshark says its no-logs policy was checked by independent audits from Deloitte and Cure53. An audit confirms what was examined at a given time, so read the report’s scope and date.

Beyond the VPN

Surfshark sells a data-leak alert service, a private search tool and an antivirus. Its related data removal product, Incogni, works differently from a VPN.

What any VPN cannot do

  • It does not make you anonymous: the provider can still see your traffic’s destination unless it truly keeps no logs.
  • It does not protect you from phishing or malware by itself.
  • It will not hide you from sites where you are logged in.

Choosing

Pick a VPN based on what you need it for: public Wi-Fi security, accessing a streaming library from another country where the service’s terms allow it, or privacy from your local network.

What we could not verify

We did not run speed or leak tests, so we make no claims on performance. Ownership details come from the press release and security-industry reporting.
