Ask Shipt is an AI shopping assistant inside Shipt that helps customers plan meals, discover recipes and turn natural-language requests into a grocery cart.
Shipt launched the feature in September 2026 as delivery companies increasingly compete on conversational shopping rather than only product search.
What can Ask Shipt do?
Users can ask the assistant for meal ideas, grocery lists or product suggestions.
Examples include planning lunches for a family, building a cart for an event, finding products that fit a budget or creating a list from a recipe.
Can you upload a photo?
Yes. Shipt says users can upload a photo of a dish and ask the system to identify ingredients and help build a cart.
AI image recognition can be wrong, so review the suggested ingredients before ordering.
Where is Ask Shipt available?
The assistant is available through the Shipt app and Shipt.com for supported customers and retailers.
Shipt itself serves a large share of US households rather than every location equally.
How do you use it?
Select the retailer you want to shop from and open Ask Shipt near the search area.
You can then type a request, paste a recipe, add a list or upload an image. The assistant suggests products and adds selected items to the cart.
Can you edit what the AI chooses?
Yes. The cart can be reviewed normally.
Users can change quantities, swap products or refine the request before checking out.
Does Ask Shipt know about allergies?
Shipt specifically warns users not to rely on the assistant as medical or allergy advice.
Ingredient and nutrition information can be incomplete or outdated. People with allergies or medical dietary restrictions should check the physical product label and seek qualified advice when needed.
What data should you avoid sharing?
Shipt says users should not put personal financial data, sensitive information or protected health information into Ask Shipt chats.
The conversation should stay focused on the shopping task.
Can you use Shipt through other AI assistants?
Yes. Shipt has also built integrations that let users start a shopping order from supported AI platforms including ChatGPT and Claude.
Those integrations can create a cart that is transferred into Shipt for checkout.
Is Ask Shipt legitimate?
Yes. It is an official Shipt feature documented on Shipt’s corporate site and help centre.
Be cautious of third-party sites claiming to be Ask Shipt while asking for passwords or card details outside normal Shipt checkout.
Ask Shipt versus Instacart Clementine
The two products are similar. Both turn conversational requests into grocery suggestions and carts.
Instacart’s assistant is called Clementine. Ask Shipt works inside Shipt’s marketplace and with Shipt’s participating retailers.
The practical difference for most shoppers will be which service covers their preferred stores, prices and delivery area.
Will AI replace grocery search?
Probably not completely.
Search is faster when you already know the exact product. Conversational shopping is more useful when the user knows the outcome they want but not the exact items needed.
