Sonos Beam Ultra: Price, Specs, Dolby Atmos and Beam Gen 2 Differences

Sonos Beam Ultra is a $699 compact soundbar with true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos, Bluetooth, HDMI eARC and upward-firing speakers. Here is what changed from Beam Gen 2 and who should consider it.

Sonos Beam Ultra is the company’s new compact premium soundbar, launched in September 2026 as the successor to Beam Gen 2.

The biggest change is true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos from a soundbar that is still designed for smaller TVs and rooms. In the United States, Beam Ultra costs US$699 and began shipping at the end of September.

What is new compared with Beam Gen 2?

The old Beam Gen 2 could decode Dolby Atmos, but its compact acoustic design did not contain dedicated upward-firing drivers. Beam Ultra adds real upward-firing tweeters and expands the internal speaker architecture.

Sonos now describes Beam Ultra as a true 7.1.2 system. Beam Gen 2 remains cheaper at around US$499, so the decision is whether the stronger spatial audio and redesigned hardware justify the US$200 difference.

Does Beam Ultra need rear speakers?

No. It works as a standalone soundbar.

However, Sonos also sells it as part of surround packages with Era speakers and Sub products. A standalone Beam Ultra creates virtual and physical spatial effects from the front of the room, while rear speakers add actual sound behind the listener.

Does it have a subwoofer built in?

Beam Ultra has four built-in low-profile woofers, but it is not the same thing as having a separate Sonos Sub or Sub Mini.

People in apartments or smaller rooms may find the standalone bass enough. Viewers who want stronger low-frequency effects for movies can add a compatible Sonos subwoofer later.

Does Beam Ultra support Bluetooth?

Yes. Beam Ultra supports Bluetooth 5.3 for audio streaming.

That is useful for visitors or devices that are not already integrated into a Sonos system. It also keeps Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2 for higher-level multi-room and Apple ecosystem use.

How does it connect to a TV?

The normal connection is HDMI eARC.

Sonos includes an HDMI cable in the box. The company sells an optical adapter separately for televisions that cannot use HDMI eARC, although older televisions can lose some modern audio features.

Does Beam Ultra support dialogue enhancement?

Yes. It includes Speech Enhancement and Night Sound.

Speech Enhancement is designed to make dialogue easier to understand, while Night Sound reduces very loud effects and raises quieter sounds so movies are easier to watch at lower volume.

What is Trueplay?

Trueplay is Sonos room tuning. It measures how the speaker sounds in the actual room and adjusts the output to compensate for walls, furniture and room shape.

This matters because the same soundbar can sound very different in an open living room than in a small bedroom.

Can it become part of a whole-home Sonos system?

Yes. That is one of Sonos’s strongest selling points.

Beam Ultra can be grouped with other Sonos speakers for music and can be expanded into a surround setup. It also works with Sonos headphones through supported TV audio features.

Beam Ultra versus Arc Ultra

Arc Ultra remains the larger and more expensive option. In the US it costs US$1,099 compared with US$699 for Beam Ultra.

Beam Ultra makes more sense for smaller rooms, smaller TVs or buyers who want to spend less. Arc Ultra is aimed at people who want the widest soundstage and have space for a larger bar.

Is the Sonos Beam Ultra worth buying?

It makes the most sense for someone who wants strong Dolby Atmos performance from a compact soundbar and either already owns Sonos products or expects to expand later.

If you already own Beam Gen 2 and are happy with it, the upgrade is less automatic. The strongest reasons to change are the new dedicated height drivers, stronger bass architecture and newer wireless hardware.

If you only need clearer TV dialogue and basic streaming, cheaper soundbars can do that job.

What to check before buying

Make sure your television has HDMI eARC or understand what you may lose through an optical connection. Also measure the available space and think about whether you will eventually add surrounds or a subwoofer, because a full Sonos system can become much more expensive than the soundbar alone.
