New Disney+ App in South Africa: Migration Deadline, Basic Plan and What Changes

Disney+ launched a new app in South Africa in September 2026 and is retiring the old app on 12 October. Here is what happens to subscribers, DStv access and the new Basic plan.

Disney+ launched a replacement app in South Africa on 9 September 2026 and is retiring the old app on 12 October 2026.

That means South African subscribers need to move to the new app rather than simply waiting for an automatic update to the old one.

When does the old Disney+ app stop working?

The retirement date is 12 October 2026.

DStv says the old application can still be used until that date, but new Disney+ content stopped being added to the old version after the new app launched on 9 September.

Do you need a new Disney+ account?

Existing subscribers can use their current credentials to sign in to the replacement app.

However, local reporting has warned that some profile information, viewing history or watchlist data may not move over exactly as users expect. Check the new app after signing in rather than assuming every preference has been copied.

What is the Disney+ Basic plan?

The new app also changes Disney’s cheapest South African tier.

The previous mobile-focused option is being replaced by a Basic plan. Local reports put the Basic price at around R49 to R50 per month at launch.

Unlike the old mobile-only arrangement, the new Basic option can be used on larger screens such as TVs, monitors and laptops, although picture quality and feature limits differ from higher tiers.

How do you get the Basic plan?

MyBroadband reported that sign-up for the Basic tier is being handled through MTN Play.

Because package details can change, check Disney or MTN’s current terms before subscribing rather than relying on an old price screenshot.

What happens to Disney+ on DStv Streama?

The new Disney+ app is not supported on DStv Streama or the Explora Ultra in the same way the old app was.

DStv says users of those devices can continue using the old Disney+ app only until it is retired.

Can you still add Disney+ to a DStv bill?

No new Disney+ add-to-bill subscriptions are being accepted through DStv.

DStv said existing add-to-bill customers would be contacted separately about their options.

What is new in the replacement app?

The new South African app is part of Disney’s move toward a more unified global Disney+ platform.

Current descriptions include broader language support, profile controls, Junior Mode and the same wider Disney+ catalogue covering Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Hulu and other content available in the region.

Is the new app legitimate?

Yes. The migration has been publicly announced through Disney-related channels and DStv support material.

That said, forced migrations create good phishing opportunities. Do not install a supposed “new Disney app” from an APK sent through WhatsApp or a random download site.

Use your device’s official app store or links from Disney’s own South African site.

What should existing subscribers do?

Download the replacement app, sign in with your existing account and verify your subscription before the old app is retired.

If you use DStv Streama, Explora Ultra or DStv billing, check the platform-specific migration instructions because those arrangements are changing.
