Kiwi.com: How Virtual Interlining and the Kiwi.com Guarantee Work

Kiwi.com is an online travel agency headquartered in Brno, Czech Republic, that specialises in flights. It was founded in 2012 by Oliver Dlouhý and Jozef Képesi under the name Skypicker, and its main idea is “virtual interlining”: building one itinerary out of tickets from airlines that do not normally sell to each other.

What virtual interlining means

Most airline booking engines only combine flights from the same airline or alliance. Kiwi.com’s search also joins separate tickets, including low-cost carriers, into a single trip to find cheaper or otherwise unavailable routes. The consequence is that a connection can consist of two independent tickets, so one airline has no obligation to the other if the first flight is late. That risk is the reason the Kiwi.com Guarantee exists.

The Nomad search

Nomad is a multi-city feature. You list the places you want to visit and the dates you are flexible between, and Kiwi.com searches the possible orders to find the cheapest overall itinerary instead of requiring you to fix the sequence yourself.

The Kiwi.com Guarantee

Kiwi.com says its Guarantee includes disruption protection, automatic check-in, real-time flight and boarding information, and round-the-clock chat support. For disruption protection, the company states that if part of an itinerary is cancelled or significantly changed, it will offer Kiwi.com Credit for a comparable alternative. Read the current terms on its Guarantee page, including which problems count as covered and how a claim is made.

Fees and what to read before buying

Kiwi.com publishes a page that explains its fees and pricing. Check the final price at checkout, any bag and seat charges that the airline applies, and whether your itinerary uses a self-transfer connection that requires you to collect bags and re-check in.

What we could not verify

We did not book through Kiwi.com or file a claim, so we cannot describe how smoothly claims are handled. Figures such as daily searches and seats sold come from the company and reference sources. Terms are updated by the company, and the Guarantee page is the authority on current coverage.
