Is ThredUp Legit?
ThredUp is one of the largest online secondhand clothing marketplaces in the US, offering both buying and selling of gently used women’s and kids’ fashion. Resale fashion is booming — but is ThredUp actually legit and worth using?
What Is ThredUp?
ThredUp (NASDAQ: TDUP) is a publicly traded US online consignment and thrift store. Founded in 2009, it allows sellers to send in bags of clothing for ThredUp to sort, list, and sell on their behalf. Buyers browse a huge selection of branded, secondhand clothing at significantly reduced prices.
Is ThredUp Safe to Buy From?
Yes — ThredUp is a legitimate, well-regulated public company. Items listed are photographed and described by ThredUp’s team, not by random individuals. Buyers receive a 14-day return window on most items. The platform is safe and reliable for buying.
The Selling Side — Honest Assessment
Selling on ThredUp is where the experience becomes more nuanced:
- ThredUp sends you a “Clean Out Kit” (a bag) — you fill it and ship it to them for free
- They inspect, photograph, and list your items — but they accept only a fraction of what you send
- Rejected items are either returned (for a fee) or donated/recycled
- Payouts per item are very low — typically $1–$5 for most clothing items
- Higher-end designer pieces earn proportionally more
Verdict
ThredUp is completely legit. For buyers, it is an excellent way to find branded secondhand clothing at great prices. For sellers, it is best viewed as a low-effort way to clear out a wardrobe rather than a meaningful income source — payouts are low. For designer pieces, selling directly on Depop or Poshmark typically yields more.
