What Is CarShield?
CarShield sells vehicle service contracts (commonly called “extended warranties” or “auto warranties”) that claim to cover repair costs for mechanical breakdowns of vehicles that are out of their original manufacturer’s warranty. It markets aggressively through television, radio, and direct mail targeting owners of older vehicles.
The FTC Action Against CarShield
In 2024, the Federal Trade Commission reached a $10 million settlement with CarShield over deceptive advertising claims. The FTC found that CarShield made misleading representations about the coverage its contracts provided — specifically that marketing materials implied more comprehensive coverage than the actual contracts delivered, and that consumers faced significant claim denials for repairs that advertising implied would be covered.

- Compare total contract cost against the statistical probability of mechanical repairs for your specific vehicle
- Consider self-insuring (saving the monthly premium cost) as an alternative — for many vehicles, the monthly savings exceeds average repair costs
